Good stuff here, Denis, as usual. It brought to mind a question I've had that maybe you can cove in a future post, which is, does our metabolism slow as we age, and if so, how can we counter it / account for it in our workouts?

Thanks, Todd! The most recent study on this came from Dr. Herman Pontzer. His research indicates metabolism holds steady until about 60 and then declines about .7% a year. Here it is:

I really like Dr. Pontzer and his book Burn is amazing, but he's on a sacred cow busting streak right now, so I think his finding might be a little extreme. I'm really hoping he doesn't get discredited like Brian Wansink. (The small plate guy.)

Either way, while metabolism might not be slowing, muscle mass certainly does decline, so that'll have an impact. The two things I'd recommend are adding a little resistance work to your regime (if you don't already) and, if your pudge gets to be too much for you, you might want to eat a little less.
